NSE turnover opens 36.5% higher

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) opened the week starting June 17 with a total of 24 million shares valued at Ksh669 million.

During the previous session on June 14, the bourse had registered 12 million shares valued at Ksh490 million.

The marked improvement represented a 36.5% jump on a day dominated by trading of Safaricom shares.

At 20.5 million shares traded at the bourse, Safaricom’s transaction represented 83.62% of the day’s traded value.

Trading at between Ksh27.10 and Ksh27.35, the giant telco’s shares were valued at 560 million.

The bonds market also jumped from Ksh1.56 billion posted on Friday to Monday’s Ksh3.38 billion.

At the indices, all the counters were blinking red having registered negative gains.

The All Share Index (NASI), which encompasses all listed companies, shed 1.65 points to settle at 148.47.

NSE 20 share Index, which cumulates the top 20 performing firms, was down 21.08 points to stand at 2685.70.

Its similar index that ranks the top 25 companies on the bourse, the NSE 25 Share index, dropped 38.71 points to stand at 3599.27.

NSE Sectors

Despite being a regular top trader, the Banking Sector plunged to below a two-figured percentage in terms of contribution to the day’s traded value.

With shares worth Ksh49 million transacted, banks accounted for 7.35% of the day’s traded value.

Equity Group Holdings moved 533,000 shares valued at Ksh21M at between Ksh39.80 and Ksh40.50.

KCB Group was down 15cents to Ksh39.50 and moved 440,000 shares valued at Ksh17 million.

Co-operative Bank moved 531,000 shares worth Ksh6.5 million and closed at Ksh12.35.

The Energy & Petroleum Sector had shares worth Ksh1.5 million transacted which represented 0.23% of the day’s traded value.

Kenya Power & Lighting exchanged 321,000 shares valued at Ksh1.2 million at between Ksh3.90 and Ksh3.95.

The Investment Sector had shares worth Kes.17.4M traded & accounted for 2.60% of the day’s turnover.

Centum closed the day 0.15% lower to Ksh33.95 moving 510,000 shares valued at Ksh17 million.

The Manufacturing & Allied Sector had shares worth Ksh38 million transacted which represented 5.70% of the day’s traded value.

East African Breweries had 186,000 shares valued at Ksh38 million transacted at between Ksh203.25 and Ksh205.
