Nine passengers were injured, none critically, when a bus they were travelling in plunged off a harbour into the Indian Ocean at Likoni Ferry in Mombasa on Sunday morning.
Onlookers reported that the driver of the Chania Executive bus, which was travelling from Nairobi to Ukunda, was attempting a three-point turn on a narrow clifftop track into the ferry when the bus slipped over the edge, ploughed through railings and into the water at about 8 AM.
The bus occupants, which included a mix of men, women and children, were trapped inside the vehicle as it bounced off face on its way down before overturning and resting on its left side in the ocean water. Rescuers found some of them scattered around the crushed remains of the bus.

“We have people on site, but the bus has been retrieved from the water. We have received reports that there were approximately nine people injured. They were inside the bus,” a Kenya Red Cross spokesperson said.
“No deaths have been reported, but we are still monitoring the situation for more updates.”
Although it is still unclear how many people were on the bus at the time of the incident, the police, who later joined the Kenya Red Cross crews at the scene in rescue efforts, said it was a miracle that anyone survived the impact.
At the time of reporting, a specialist team of divers from Kenya Ferry Services had been called to recover the vehicle.
