Veteran Nation Media Group journalist Kitavi Mutua has died after being bitten by a venomous snake at his home in Kitui County.

Mutua died on Friday night at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), where he had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), according to reports.

The journalist, who was based in Kitui South, reportedly sustained the snakebite while sleeping at his home. Preliminary accounts indicate that he spent about a week seeking medical attention before his condition deteriorated and he was admitted to hospital.

The reported progression of the venom affected his internal organs, ultimately leading to his critical condition. Further details surrounding the incident and the circumstances of the delay in treatment were not immediately available.

His death has thrown the media fraternity into mourning.

Mutua was a long-serving correspondent for the Daily Nation, based in Kitui, where for years he covered politics, development and community affairs. His reporting brought news from Kitui and the wider Ukambani region to a national audience.

Among those who paid tribute was Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu, who on Saturday, October 31, described Mutua as more than a journalist — a mentor and friend.

“Beyond being a journalist, Kitavi was a mentor, a friend, and a professional who believed in helping others. I will forever be grateful for the role he played in shaping my understanding of communication and political engagement,” Kasalu said.

She recalled how Mutua mentored her when she joined politics about a decade ago, helping her navigate media relations and public communication.

“His passing is not just a loss to his family and friends, but also to the journalism fraternity and the people of Kitui, whom he served through his profession,” she added.

Colleagues remember Mutua as a dedicated, humble and knowledgeable journalist who was generous with his experience and committed to telling local stories with national impact.

Burial arrangements are yet to be announced.

May he rest in peace.
