Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has condemned the attack on Rachel Wandeto, allegedly targeted over her political opinions, warning against rising hate speech and divisive rhetoric in the country.

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, Murkomen said Kenya’s Constitution guarantees freedom of expression and political opinion, adding that no Kenyan should face violence because of their beliefs.

“Our vibrant democracy, backed by a robust Constitution, allows for free expression of political opinion that cannot be taken away by anybody,” said Murkomen.

The CS revealed that he had visited Madam Rachel Wandeto, who is currently receiving treatment after being attacked and injured in what authorities believe may have been linked to her political views.

According to Murkomen, doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital informed him that Wandeto suffered significant burns and was receiving specialised treatment.

“This evening, I visited Madam Rachel Wandeto, who was attacked and injured for expressing her political opinion,” he said.

“The doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital informed us that she suffered significant burns and is getting the best care possible.”

Murkomen strongly condemned the incident, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable in a democratic society.

“I condemn this barbaric act that has no place in our society,” he stated.

He added that investigative agencies had already launched investigations to establish the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible.

“Our investigative agencies are working hard to establish the motive and bring to book the perpetrators of the heinous act,” he said.

The Interior CS also warned against inflammatory political rhetoric, saying the government would take firm measures against individuals spreading hate and radicalisation.

“We will therefore take all measures to rein in divisive and incendiary political rhetoric, which is spreading hate and radicalization,” he said.

Murkomen further assured Wandeto’s family that the government would support her treatment under the leadership of President William Ruto.

“Whatever the motive, no Kenyan should go through such an ordeal because of her beliefs,” he added.

“We wish Rachel a quick recovery and grace to her family as they come to terms with this dreadful act. The Government, led by H.E. President William Samoei Ruto, will assist the family to ensure Rachel gets the best possible treatment.”

The CS was accompanied during the hospital visit by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and other senior security officials.
