Charles Mwangi Ng’ang’a may not ring a bell to many Kenyans. But quietly in his backyard in Murang’a County, Ng’ang’a, the MCA of Ichagaki Ward, is proving a man with a big heart.
He is understood to have forfeited his salary twice and directed the money to repair the Maragua loop road.
He is at it again, but this time round he has hit the national limelight after donating his April salary to the National Emergency Response Committee on Coronavirus appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta to lead the fight against the spread of Coronavirus in Kenya.
Lockdown blues
The Ichagaki ward MCA says he reached the decision to donate his pay after consulting with his family members. He officially delivered the letter authorizing his salary to be chanelled to the fight against Covid-19 to Murang’a County Assembly clerk on 9th April. It’s not clear how much it is but MCA earn over Ksh500,000 per month including allowances.
Meanwhile, Ng’ang’a called on the task force to create a pay bill number to receive donations from well-wishers which can help other Kenyans in case the government declares a total lockdown.
“I wish to congratulate President Uhuru Kenyatta for limiting movements in affected counties to minimize the spread of Covid-19 into rural areas. The partial lockdown is necessary to avoid migration of the virus to upcountry areas especially during Easter holidays,” he said.
Charles Mwangi Ng’ang’a aka Ichagaki One, a JKUAT Governance and Leadership graduate and a master’s holder, says the coronavirus is real. “It’s a worldwide pandemic and I urge everyone to take steps in combating it,” he says.

He asked the Kenyans adhere to the government guidelines geared at containing the spread of Covid-19. “It’s for our own survival and therefore let’s keep social distance, wash hands regularly and avoid handshakes. Regular medical checkups should be a routine and let’s all humble before God”.
He asked community based well-wishers and the church to come out and help the government in feeding the poor, vulnerable, old and sick members of our society.
Charity in schools
As part of his charity programmes since 2014, standard eight pupils and KSCE candidates in day schools in Ichagaki ward have been receiving free examination materials such as geometrical sets, mathematical tables, pens, rulers, pencils and rubbers.
Last year, he extended his donation to standard eight pupils in the neighboring ward and also provided food for class eight candidates.
There is speculation that he might contest the Murang’a Senatorial seat in 2022, which denies insisting that focus is now on fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.
