Mohamed Riadha, a former student at Mount Kenya University (MKU), is set to begin an exciting international journey after securing a position aboard the MSC Seashore cruise ship as cruise staff.
Riadha, who completed his academic studies at MKU and later received professional training at the MKU Malindi Maritime Academy, was gifted branded merchandise by university officials in a brief send-off ceremony held before he departed for Florida, USA.
His training at the Malindi Maritime Academy included the mandatory Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) course — a globally recognised qualification for maritime professionals. The certification is essential for all those seeking to work in international waters.
Speaking during the send-off, MKU representatives expressed pride in Riadha’s achievement, highlighting the university’s commitment to producing globally competitive graduates ready to thrive in diverse sectors.
“This is a moment of pride not just for Mohamed, but for the entire MKU community. His journey reflects the opportunities available through our maritime training programs and the global doors they can open,” said an official from the MKU Malindi campus.
Riadha joins a growing list of Kenyan youth who are finding rewarding employment opportunities in the global cruise industry, a sector known for its demand for skilled, multilingual, and service-oriented personnel.
MSC Seashore, one of the flagship vessels of the Mediterranean Shipping Company, is renowned for its world-class amenities and international crew. As cruise staff, Riadha will be part of the hospitality team that ensures guests enjoy an unforgettable experience at sea.
His departure marks another milestone in MKU’s efforts to link academic excellence with real-world career paths, particularly in high-potential industries like maritime tourism.
