At the heart of Kisumu County, where the equator slices through green hills and generations of students have walked beneath towering gum trees, Maseno School is preparing to mark a milestone few educational institutions in Kenya can claim, 120 years of existence.

But as the prestigious national school celebrates more than a century of academic excellence, discipline and leadership, its focus is increasingly shifting from history to survival in a rapidly evolving educational landscape.

The school’s anniversary celebration, dubbed Maseno@120, is expected to bring together alumni, government officials, education stakeholders and national leaders, including President William Ruto, who is expected to grace the event.

Behind the celebration, however, lies an ambitious Ksh2 billion redevelopment blueprint aimed at transforming the institution into a modern learning hub capable of competing with Kenya’s top schools in infrastructure, technology and talent development.

From Mission School to National Institution

Founded in 1906 by missionary Reverend John Willis under the shade of gum trees, Maseno School has evolved from a modest mission institution into one of Kenya’s most recognised centres of learning. Over the decades, it has produced influential figures across politics, business, academia and sports.

Its location on the equator has long given it symbolic significance, but the school’s reputation has largely been built on academic performance and a culture of discipline that has endured for generations.

Yet administrators and alumni now acknowledge that reputation alone is no longer enough.

School leaders say the institution has outgrown many of its facilities, particularly as Kenya transitions into the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, which places greater emphasis on practical learning, talent development and modern infrastructure.

Ksh2 Billion Redevelopment Plan

At the centre of the school’s future ambitions is a redevelopment masterplan valued at Sh2 billion.

The project is anchored on three pillars: infrastructure modernisation, academic transformation and financial sustainability.

The infrastructure component seeks to overhaul aging facilities and construct modern laboratories, dormitories, halls and upgraded sporting grounds. Administrators argue that the current facilities are increasingly inadequate for a school of Maseno’s stature and student population.

“We shall experience improvement in terms of infrastructure and the creation of more modern playing fields. Maseno School has outgrown the existing facilities,” said Caleb Olango, the school’s director of sports and co-curricular activities.

Olango admitted that the school currently lags behind some of its peers in modern infrastructure.

“Compared to our peers like Mang’u and Alliance, we do not have modern laboratories, dormitories, halls, and playing surfaces,” he said.

The redevelopment aims to reposition the institution as a globally competitive learning environment where physical infrastructure supports academic excellence and innovation.

Aligning With Competency-Based Education

School leaders see the transformation as necessary for adapting to Kenya’s new education system.

Olango said investment in facilities would be critical in helping students thrive under the Competency-Based Education curriculum.

“The investment in the current generation is the best thing the government can do,” he said.

“If we have the right facilities, then the young generation will benefit a great deal.”

The school’s Academic Strategic Plan 2026 sets ambitious performance targets, including achieving a mean grade of 11.0 and ensuring a 100 per cent university transition rate.

Administrators believe technology-driven classrooms, improved laboratories and talent-based learning environments will become increasingly essential as schools compete not only academically but also in innovation and co-curricular excellence.

Alumni Foundation to Drive Sustainability

A key part of the strategy is reducing reliance on traditional funding streams through the creation of the Old Boys and Friends of Maseno School Foundation.

The initiative seeks to mobilise support from the school’s global alumni network and professionally invest contributions to fund scholarships, infrastructure projects and student welfare programmes.

The model reflects a growing trend among elite Kenyan schools that are increasingly turning to alumni-backed foundations to finance expansion and maintain competitiveness amid rising operational costs.

School officials say the foundation will also support talent development programmes, especially in sports.

“We have invested heavily in sports, and currently we are also recruiting students based on their talent,” Olango said.

Maseno has historically maintained a strong sporting culture, producing athletes who have gone on to represent Kenya at national and international levels.

More Than a Celebration

What was initially planned as a routine anniversary event has gradually evolved into something larger — a moment of institutional reflection and national symbolism.

The celebration, originally scheduled for April before being postponed to allow wider mobilisation, is expected to attract former students from across Kenya and abroad.

For many alumni, the event represents more than nostalgia. It is a reaffirmation of identity and a chance to shape the next chapter of an institution that has played a significant role in Kenya’s educational history.

As Maseno marks 120 years, its biggest challenge may no longer be preserving its legacy, but ensuring that legacy remains relevant in a future increasingly defined by technology, innovation and global competition.
