Nairobi residents have been advised to prepare for major traffic disruptions on Sunday, August 17, 2025, as the city hosts the CHAN 2024 clash between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Zambia’s Chipolopolo at Kasarani Stadium.
The National Police Service announced on Saturday that several routes will be closed or partially restricted to ensure order during the match.
According to the advisory, Aerodrome Road between Madaraka and Bunyala Roundabout will be closed, while Lang’ata Road and Mombasa Road will each lose one lane in selected sections.
Motorists using Mombasa Road toward the city centre have been urged to take Likoni Road to Enterprise Road or divert through the Southern Bypass at Ole Sereni.
Those travelling from Lang’ata Road are advised to use Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road via Mbagathi Roundabout.
Traffic along the Thika Superhighway will also be affected. Police indicated that motorists can avoid heavy delays by diverting through Kiambu Road at Exit 4 or using the Northern Bypass. Other recommended routes include Ruaka through Baba Ndogo and Lucky Summer, leading to Mwiki.
Vehicles without access passes headed to Kasarani will only be allowed to use the service lanes at Exit 7 or 8.
Additional officers will be deployed along the affected routes to manage congestion and guide drivers. Police have cautioned that anyone breaking traffic rules will face stern action.
Commuters and fans are being asked to start their journeys early, cooperate with officers on the ground, and follow the designated diversions for smoother movement.
DR. Congo vs Morocco
The road closures come ahead of a packed football day in Nairobi. At Nyayo Stadium, DR Congo will play Morocco at 5:00 pm before Harambee Stars face Zambia at Kasarani later in the evening. Kenya already sits at the top of Group A with seven points and has qualified for the quarter finals, but the team will be looking to cement first place with a win over Zambia. Tickets for the match sold out quickly, with only 27,000 electronic tickets available after CAF imposed crowd control measures.
With thousands of fans expected on the roads and around the stadiums, police have urged both motorists and supporters to plan their movements early and remain patient throughout the day.
The authorities emphasised that cooperation from the public will be crucial in ensuring safety and smooth traffic flow during the high-profile fixtures.
