The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in the murder of famed Kenyan football fanatic Isaac Juma Onyango.

Juma was known for his unmatched support for Harambee Stars and AFC Leopards – he religiously attended games with his body painted in the team’s colours. Juma had been dealing with a land dispute which detectives believe led to his death.

The suspect, 27-year old Milton Namatsi was arrested at his house by detectives based in Mumias after preliminary investigations linked him to the gruesome murder. Juma was attacked and slashed to death with machetes right outside his home on the night of Wednesday, January 26.

The DCI disclosed that they were working to arrest the rest of the suspects. It emerged that Juma’s own son narrowly escaped death as he got out of the house with his father to check out the commotion moments before they were attacked.

His wife told the press that the events took place almost in a flash. She asserted that Juma had long warned that the land issues could cost him his life.

Indeed, it was almost as if Juma saw it coming as he also used his fanaticism to raise awareness, carrying a sign to some games that warned his life was in danger and that unnamed individuals were out to take his land.

Juma was a Nakuru-based newspaper vendor who eventually relocated to Kakamega County.

In their report, the DCI shared:”Juma and his family had just taken their evening meal at their home in Ebuyenjere village in Mumias, when his killers struck.”

“Earlier in the night, children who were taking their supper outside the house had reported seeing silhouettes of human beings lurking against the fence. They went back to the house and reported to their parents who took the matter lightly.”

“Moments later, they heard a commotion in the sheep pen and immediately afterwards the sheep began bleating, prompting Juma and his 17-year-old son to dash outside. But before they could establish what was happening, a group of men armed with machetes attacked them, hacking Juma to death.”
