A fire that started in a clubhouse almost completely destroyed the entire guest area at the main building of Limuru Country Club in Limuru, 25 kilometres from Nairobi, early this morning.
Firefighters from Kiambu County were still battling the blaze, which could be seen for miles around, twelve hours after it broke out at around 3:30 AM.
“We regret to inform our members and followers that a fire broke out at the Limuru Country Club clubhouse earlier today, January 4, 2025, at approximately 3:30 AM,” said Mr John Keru, Limuru Country Club’s Chairman, in a statement after the incident.

The chairperson, who described the central hub of the course, where golfers check-in, pay, and enjoy food and drinks, as having been “wiped out,” confirmed that there were no reports of injuries.
“Thankfully, no staff, members, or guests were inside the clubhouse at the time of the incident. The relevant authorities and stakeholders have been engaged to investigate the cause of the fire.”
Perhaps one of the oldest and most recognised golf courses in the country since its establishment in 1945, Limuru Country Club will close temporarily while investigations, safety assessments, reconstruction, and rehabilitation are carried out, according to Keru.
Limuru Country Club opened its first nine holes in 1949, adding the second nine holes in 1952. The course boundaries remain the same today as they were, originally, but the layout has been redesigned, re-sculpted, and refined over the years into the magnificent 18-hole course with perfectly manicured fairways seen today.
For years, it has built a reputation for offering players an unforgettable and unique golfing experience on the only golf course surrounding a horse racing track in the country.
In addition to the golf course, the club features lawn bowling, tennis courts, a cricket pitch, squash courts, and a swimming pool.
