In a high-stakes opener at the sold-out Kasarani Stadium, Kenya’s Harambee Stars faces seasoned opponents D.R. Congo—the most successful side in CHAN history.

The match offers a compelling mix of youthful ambition and continental experience, setting the tone for what promises to be a fiercely competitive Group A.

Packed House at Kasarani

Tickets for Sunday’s match are officially sold out, with fans clamouring to watch the home side take on the two-time CHAN champions. Kasarani will be buzzing with anticipation as both teams make their introductions ahead of what many analysts have dubbed one of the group’s toughest encounters.

D.R. Congo’s Arrival and Expectations

The Leopards arrived in Nairobi ahead of schedule, with coach Otis Ngoma praising Kenya’s hospitality and expressing confidence in his team’s readiness.

“We had a good time in Tanzania preparing for this great tournament. Our players are in good condition and ready for the task ahead,” Ngoma said.

He further emphasised the importance of staying injury-free and match-fit after a warm-up win over Jumas FC.

“This game gave us a clearer picture of our current level. I’m satisfied because there were no injuries… We will give our best,” he added.

Key striker Oscar Kabwit, known for his imposing strength and agility, is expected to be Congo’s main attacking threat. Kabwit’s versatility—whether deployed centrally or on the wing—could well prove decisive against a debutant Kenyan side.

Harambee Stars’ Bold Strategy

Kenya’s head coach Benni McCarthy made several squad changes ahead of the opener, injecting youthful energy into the lineup with rising stars such as Brian Michira, Chrispine Erambo, and Edward Omondi.

“Come Sunday… the headache now lies on me and other coaches on selecting our first eleven, and I would rather those kinds of headaches than anything else,” McCarthy said.

With competition for places heating up, McCarthy joked:“My headache is as big as a watermelon… it is a really tough job,” before stressing the importance of a strong start.

“The first game is extremely important… we are in the Group of Death and if we get a good result against D.R. Congo, it will give us belief ahead of the next matches.”

Positioned alongside tournament heavyweights Morocco, Zambia, and Angola, Kenya’s route to the knockout stage is anything but easy.

Homegrown Talent and Audience Hope

Among the fresh faces is 19-year-old midfielder Austin Odongo, one of the youngest in the Stars squad and a symbol of Kenya’s football future. A former student at Homabay High School, Odongo caught national attention with standout performances at Shabana FC and now seeks to make an impression on the continental stage.

His inclusion reflects Kenya’s emphasis on local talent and gives fans reason to dream—CHAN, after all, is a tournament that exists to showcase players in domestic leagues.

Why This Game Matters

For Kenya, a victory means more than three points—it could unlock belief and momentum in a daunting group. Football pundits and former players alike believe that a strong start against Congo would catalyse deeper success in the tournament.

The Leopards, with their CHAN pedigree, are widely expected to lead the group—but Kenya’s willingness to challenge expectations has captured local imagination.
