The Kenyan government, through the Ministry of Education, has responded to claims that it plans to raise admission requirements at all public and private universities by revising the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) entry grade from C+ to B-, beginning next academic year in 2025.

Julius Ogamba, the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Education, addressed the report on Monday after a certain news website alleged that the government intended to make it harder for students to gain university admission as part of efforts to transform the country’s higher education system by reshaping student success to improve post-graduation outcomes.

“This announcement marks a departure from the traditional university entry grade of C+, which has been the standard for years,” the website had stated.

According to the Education CS, however, this is fake news, as neither the government nor the ministry has raised KCSE university grades. He confirmed that students who sit for the KCSE in 2024 will qualify for bachelor’s degree programmes with an aggregate of C+ and above, as has been the case since 2009.

He also commented on the release of results, stating they would be announced in January 2025, not December this year, due to delays caused by various factors.

“Right now, we are proceeding with the marking, and once the results are ready, we will release them. I am unable to provide a specific date because we are still in the process of marking. You will get the results,” CS Ogamba remarked.

The CS further explained that the delays were attributed to the high number of candidates (965,501) who sat for the exams and the extensive scrutiny currently underway to prevent cheating.
