Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has defended its move to demolish a car wash business linked to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, saying the action was part of a lawful clearance of encroachers along a railway corridor earmarked for critical infrastructure development ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In a press statement dated January 14, 2026, Kenya Railways said the demolitions were necessary to pave the way for the expansion of the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, which will play a central role in transporting fans, teams and officials during the continental football tournament Kenya is set to co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

The statement follows public criticism by Governor Wamatangi after the demolition of the car wash, which was located along a railway reserve.

Speaking shortly after the incident, the governor questioned the manner in which the demolition was carried out and suggested the process lacked adequate consultation.

“This was a legitimate business that employed young people, and the way it was brought down raises serious questions about fairness and due process,” Governor Wamatangi said.

“Development should not come at the expense of livelihoods without engagement, transparency and humane handling.”

However, Kenya Railways maintains that the cleared land, including the site where the car wash stood, falls within a designated railway corridor and was identified for development long before the demolitions took place. According to the corporation, all encroachers were issued with notices in advance and given adequate time to vacate.

“The Government intends to construct a railway station adjacent to Nyayo National Stadium and a spur line from Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo Stadium area, Kibera to Talanta Sports City Stadium,” the statement reads.

“Any illegal structures found on the corridor will be demolished and/or removed without further notice and at the encroacher’s risk and cost.”

The planned rail spur is expected to improve access to key AFCON venues, including Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Talanta Sports City Stadium, and Nyayo National Stadium, which has been designated as a training centre because of its central location. Transport officials say the new line will offer a safe, reliable and affordable alternative to road transport in a city grappling with chronic congestion.

Kenya Railways has insisted that the operation was not politically motivated, stating that the same rules apply to all encroachers regardless of status.
