Kenya and Portugal are set to witness increased economic opportunities following the launch of the Portuguese Business Council Kenya, which is targeting Portuguese and Kenyan companies and individuals.
Portuguese companies are eyeing increased trade in pharmaceuticals, technology, agriculture, and manufacturing industries in the Kenyan market.
“The Portuguese Business Council Kenya will provide networking opportunities for businesses and individuals from both nations while at the same time working with relevant agencies to ensure there is ease in carrying out this trade,” said João Ramos, a founding member of the council.
Notable Portuguese companies that are already present in Kenya include engineering firm Mota Engil, renewable energy utility company RVE.SOL Lda and vehicle assembler Salvador Caetano.
Companies and individuals are eligible to join the newly formed council through various membership packages.
Kenya on its part has been shepherding high-level talks aimed at increasing areas of cooperation between the two countries over the last few years.
“The number of bilateral instruments of cooperation that have been signed in the diverse fields have also provided the much-needed impetus for enhancing these relations. One such instrument was the Agreement on General Cooperation concluded during the visit by the Portuguese, Secretary for Foreign Affairs in June last year,” said Director General for International Conferences and Events Benson Ogutu at the launch of the council.

Between 2010 and 2017 trade between Kenya and Portugal increased by 53 per cent to stand at Ksh 1.7 billion.
