The Kenyan government is pushing ahead with an ambitious programme to provide modern, high-quality housing for thousands of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel and their families, aiming to boost welfare, morale and living standards across the armed forces.
Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru visited ongoing construction sites at Lang’ata and Kahawa garrisons this week to review progress on the projects, which form part of the country’s flagship Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).

At Lang’ata Garrison, 38 residential blocks are under construction, delivering 1,470 housing units expected to be completed in 2027.
On the other hand, the larger Kahawa Garrison project involves 65 blocks and will provide 3,285 units. Some homes at Kahawa are due to be ready for occupation by the end of this year, with the remainder also scheduled for 2027, according to the PS.
In total, the Ministry of Defence, working in partnership with the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, plans to deliver 10,095 Phase 1 units across five sites: Lang’ata, Embakasi, Kahawa, Moi Air Base and Roysambu Military Camp.
This Affordable Housing Programme efforts complement a separate Public-Private Partnership track that is delivering 3,069 additional units at barracks in Roysambu, Nanyuki, Lanet, Gilgil, and Mariakani. The 500-unit Roysambu project was completed and handed over in February, with the remaining four sites nearing completion.
The initiative aligns with President William Samoei Ruto’s broader push to expand access to decent and affordable housing across Kenya.
Officials describe the projects as a strategic investment in personnel morale and retention within the armed forces.
