Kenya’s Harambee Stars got their CHAN 2024 campaign off to a dream start with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over continental heavyweights DR Congo in front of a packed and electrified Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
In what is being hailed as one of the most significant victories in Kenya’s home football history, the Stars displayed discipline, energy, and tactical maturity to overcome the two-time CHAN champions—sending a clear message that they are not just hosts, but genuine contenders.
Fast Start, Fierce Atmosphere
Buoyed by a capacity crowd, including President William Ruto and senior government officials, Kenya started the match with intent. The breakthrough came in the first half through Austin Odongo, the 19-year-old midfield sensation, who capitalised on a loose ball inside the box and fired home a composed finish—sending Kasarani into raptures.
It was a moment of magic for the teenager, who recently completed high school and has quickly become one of Kenya’s most promising young stars. His goal not only settled the match but also symbolised the new era of Kenyan football.
Holding the Lead
DR Congo responded with pressure and attacking threats, but Kenya’s defence stood firm. Skipper Charles Otieno led from the back, marshalling a solid line that frustrated the Leopards. Goalkeeper James Wanjala was also pivotal, making two crucial saves late in the second half to deny the Congolese a route back into the game.
Coach Benni McCarthy’s tactical setup ensured Kenya maintained composure throughout, particularly in the midfield, where Odongo and Brian Michira controlled possession and tempo.
“This is the kind of performance we’ve been building towards,” McCarthy said after the final whistle. “It’s not just about the win—it’s about belief. These boys showed they can match the best.”
Ruto’s Promise and Nation’s Pride
The win also unlocks a KSh1 million reward for each player and member of the technical team, as promised by President Ruto during a pre-match breakfast briefing. The President, who had urged the country to rally behind the team, was seen celebrating alongside fans in the VIP stand.
“Harambee Stars have made the nation proud. Let us all continue to support them. Stars must win!” Ruto posted on social media after the match.
Looking Ahead
With three points secured, Kenya now tops Group A ahead of their upcoming fixtures against Zambia and Morocco. Another win could all but confirm a place in the quarter-finals—something the Stars have never achieved in CHAN history.
