HACO Industries Kenya Limited has signed a new partnership with Nation Media Group PLC aimed at promoting environmental awareness among secondary school students.

The partnership, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will see the two organisations work together under Nation Media Group’s Newspapers in Education (NiE) programme.

The collaboration brings together HACO’s Green Learning Initiative and the media house’s education platform to introduce a structured environmental learning programme in schools.

The initiative will begin in 15 secondary schools across the country. Students in the selected institutions will receive specially prepared sustainability content while also taking part in practical environmental activities.

These include tree planting, recycling drives, waste management projects and school-based eco-challenges designed to encourage hands-on learning.

As part of the agreement, HACO will provide customised learning materials focused on sustainability and support the establishment of student-led Green Guardian Clubs. The clubs will lead environmental activities within their schools and help build a culture of conservation among learners.

NiE programme

On its part, Nation Media Group will distribute newspapers and learning resources to participating schools through the NiE programme. It will also highlight students’ environmental projects and success stories in its publications, including the Daily Nation and Taifa Leo, giving young people a platform to share their impact.

The programme will also emphasise mentorship and character development. Teachers and students will be guided on practical sustainability knowledge and exposed to possible education and career opportunities in environmental fields.

Implementation of the initiative will be overseen by a joint steering committee made up of representatives from both organisations. The team will monitor progress through monthly evaluation reports to assess the programme’s performance and outcomes.

Speaking on the partnership, HACO Industries’ Managing Director said the company is keen on investing in young people through education.

“At HACO, we believe sustainability begins with education. Through this initiative, we are intentionally investing in young people by equipping them with environmental knowledge, practical skills, and a sense of responsibility for the world they will inherit. This collaboration reflects our conviction that when business, media, and education come together, we can nurture a generation of environmentally conscious citizens who will drive Kenya’s sustainable future,” he said.

The MoU will run for one year, with room for renewal and expansion depending on the impact achieved. Both parties will co-brand learning materials and jointly showcase the achievements of the programme.
