Kenya and Canada have agreed to collaborate on structured migration, aiming to enhance human resource capacity and create organised employment opportunities for Kenyans in Canada.
This initiative was confirmed following a bilateral meeting between President William Ruto and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on September 23, in New York.
The two leaders agreed on forming teams to develop a framework that advances human resource capacity, a move that will see Kenyans seeking jobs get them in a more structured way.
Trade relations were also a key focus during the discussions.
“We reaffirmed our commitment to strengthening relations at the bilateral, regional, and global levels. We directed our teams to develop a framework that advances trade diversification, supports manufacturing, harnesses Kenya’s human resource capacity through structured migration, and deepens cooperation across key sectors,” Ruto said.
“On the global stage, we agreed to enhance collaboration on climate action and green growth. We also exchanged views on Haiti, focusing on the next steps as the UN Security Council discusses the transition from the MSS mission to its successor. We stressed the need for a transition that safeguards the progress achieved and ensures a resolution that provides the necessary conditions for a successful mission,” he added.
This development comes shortly after President Ruto held talks with Finnish President Alex Stubb in New York on September 22, 2025.
“Our focus is on expanding trade and investment while deepening multilateral engagement, especially in advancing global and regional peace and security. We share a strong commitment to resolving conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia, recognising that peace is the cornerstone of growth and shared prosperity,” Ruto said.
Ruto also highlighted Kenya’s growing economic stature.
“With world-class talent, green energy, and a thriving digital market, Kenya offers the stability and investor confidence global brands seek. Already a hub for apparel sourcing and with access to over USD 50 trillion in markets, Kenya stands out as the natural gateway to Africa,” he said.
