Got a one-GB phone? Worry not, you can now browse the internet faster using the newly launched Google-Go application (App). The app enables internet users with small phones of one Giga Byte (GB) Random Access Memory (RAM) and below to browse the internet at fast speeds.
Speaking during the launch in Nairobi recently , Google Kenya Country Manager Charles Murito said 73% of phones being shipped across Sub-Saharan Africa are 1GB RAM and below and are, therefore, slow and unable to deliver the best experience Google would want its users to have when are searching the internet.
Mr Murito said universally accessible information is its key drive of its quest to increase access to information that it is useful to users daily. “We are also working towards having a product which has the ability to drive voice search,” he explained.
However, Mr Murito said there are still challenges that face Africa which Google is working to address. “The phones which come to Africa have low storage and what people are doing constantly is deleting different files just to enable them have enough storage. What we have done is to develop the Google files go App which helps our users manage their files and delete the ones that they do not need,” he explained.

Google product marketing manager for Sub-Saharan Africa Christina Lin said the product has been launched in 26 other African countries in different languages. She said the App uses less data since it is light to download as it is only 5MB and works well with phones of 1BG RAM and less.
“Data sometimes is unstable or expensive and we are constantly working together by reviewing the technology to help more people to access the information using less data,” she said. She explained that the App will save users up to 40% on data usage. It is available for download in the Google App store.
