Chinese firm OPPO launches photogenic smartphone in Kenya

Members of the public have been asked to buy mobile phones and other ICT equipment approved by the Communication Authority of Kenya.

Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) Director Francis Wangusi said that approval of equipment was meant to protect the interest of consumers by ensuring that devices available for sale in Kenya are safe for use and can interwork with existing networks.

Speaking during the launch of OPPO F3 Camera Phone in Nairobi Monday, Mr Wangusi said that the prevailing favourable regulatory environment in the country has seen the entry of multiple players in all business segments of the local ICT market including vending of communications equipment and devices.

The F3 smartphone packs a dual front facing selfie camera, a high resolution 16MP shooter for high quality selfies with beautification technology paired with an 8MP camera with a field of view that is two times larger than standard Selfie camera for group Selfies which extend more potential and fun when taking photos.

OPPO mobile F3 will be available in the market from May 23rd at Kshh32, 990. The International Data Corporation (IDC) ranked OPPO Mobile fourth in 2016 accounting for 7.1 percent of smartphone sales worldwide. OPPO has maintained the same position in 2017 contributing a huge proportion of the 347.4 million smartphones shipped globally.

Mr. Wangusi said the prevailing favorable regulatory environment in the country has seen the entry of multiple players in all business segments of the local ICT market.

“The CA statistics show that as at December 2016, there were 32.9 million mobile subscribers and 39.6 million internet users in Kenya,” he noted

The increased demand for mobile data and other value added services have called for mobile phone manufacturers to regularly innovate to meet the ever-changing consumer tastes and preferences, he added.

The use of social media and over the top applications has also contributed to the demand of smartphones in the country, he said, explaining that this has been fueled by a corresponding increase in the demand for data among the young population.
