Canon Central and North Africa (CCNA) is executing a strategic pivot to capture the growing East African video content market, hosting its inaugural ‘Creator Lens’ event in Nairobi, Kenya. The initiative, which took place on November 19 at the Shamba Café, is a core component of Canon’s wider strategy to reposition itself as a dominant force in the video and cinema landscape, moving beyond its traditional identity as a photography brand.
The ‘Creator Lens’ event, structured around the theme LENS (Learn, Explore, Network, Synergy), brought together established and emerging content creators, signaling Canon’s direct investment in nurturing local talent and driving product adoption in high-growth areas like fashion, lifestyle, and podcasting.
Strategic Shift: From Stills to Motion
The Nairobi event is a tactical activation under Canon’s broader “ICE” (Innovation and Customer Experience) initiative. By directly engaging this cohort of content creators—spanning macro, micro, and nano-influencers—Canon aims to encourage an equipment upgrade cycle, prompting a shift from smartphone video creation to utilizing its professional and entry-level camera systems designed for video excellence.
“Through ‘Creator Lens’, we aim to nurture and empower a vibrant community of storytellers who are redefining content creation across Africa… Our goal is not only to inspire creators but also to equip them with the tools and skills they need to tell powerful visual stories, moving beyond photography and embracing the limitless possibilities of video,” stated Rashad Ghani, B2C Business Unit Director, Canon Central and North Africa.
Immersive Product Showcase Targets Key Niches
The event was less a trade show and more an operational workshop, featuring four distinct, hands-on immersive zones led by prominent local industry experts:
-
Podcast Zone (Led by Dr. Ofweneke): Focused on video solutions for podcasters, featuring professional cinema cameras like the EOS C80 and the dedicated Live Switcher Application.
-
Fashion & Lifestyle Zone (Led by Joy Kendi): Showcasing compact, vertical-shooting optimized tools, including the PowerShot V10 and the EOS R50V, crucial for rapid social media content.
-
Wedding Zone (Led by Gabriel Kasha): Positioned Canon’s cameras like the C50 and R5 Mark II as the preferred choice for high-end wedding videography, emphasizing features like 4K Dual Base ISO and Log color grading.
-
Cinematic Zone (Led by Hans Ngoteya): Highlighted high-tier cinema solutions, including the EOS C400, for specialized fields like wildlife filmmaking.

The event also included a content creation competition, incentivizing attendees to immediately test and create videos using Canon equipment, judged on both technical mastery and creativity, with winners receiving prizes and mentorship.
Pan-African Expansion Plans
While Kenya served as the launch pad, Canon has announced plans to roll out the ‘Creator Lens’ experience to other major African markets, including Morocco and Nigeria. This regional expansion underscores a clear strategy to cultivate a sustainable, professionalized ecosystem of digital content creators across the continent, directly linking product education to market growth.
