At a time when convenience and efficiency rule the world of customer service, it is important to find new ways to innovate and streamline processes that reduce friction between customers and businesses, saving time in the process.

In a game-changing partnership with Kenya’s major mobile telecommunications companies—Safaricom, Airtel, Telkom, and Faiba—InstaLipa, one of the country’s largest airtime top-up service providers, has launched a new way to buy phone credit across networks: through WhatsApp.

Officially introduced in January 2025 as the first service of its kind in Kenya, InstaLipa’s WhatsApp-based airtime purchase platform allows customers to buy credit for any network for free, paying conveniently via Mpesa.

According to the developers, they initially sold airtime using Mpesa paybills and USSD codes, but there was still considerable demand from customers asking for more convenient airtime and data services, owing to the complicated and “more manual” nature of their initial method. This, they say, sparked the idea of integrating their airtime services into WhatsApp, which is already right on people’s phones.

“Having WhatsApp integrated into our platform allows us to offer airtime to customers through just a single integration. We don’t have to rely on traditional channels, and we sell airtime for Airtel, Telkom, Faiba, and even Safaricom without charging customers a transaction fee, unlike the use of paybills.”

How to buy airtime via WhatsApp for free

As mentioned, InstaLipa allows you to buy airtime directly from WhatsApp. To get started, you can use this link available on their website and social media or:

1. Add +254 777 149392 to your contacts
2. Send “Hi” via WhatsApp to the number
3. You will see a welcome message to buy airtime for any network with zero transaction charges. Tap on Menu
4. Choose ‘Buy’ and select or enter your preferred phone number to top up
5. Enter the amount
6. Proceed to pay via Mpesa

The platform is fully automated, easy to use, and delivers airtime instantly.

One of its first users commented:
“When I first used InstaLipa WhatsApp for Airtime, I was surprised I didn’t need a contract to use the platform. Everything was available right on the app when I signed up.”

The developers shared that the minimum amount you can buy is Ksh5, while the maximum is Ksh10,000. They believe this bold innovation could eventually replace traditional, time-consuming, and costly top-up methods.
