Thirteen time Kenyan premier league champions AFC Leopards have appointed Rwandese Andre Casa Mbungo as its coach. Mbungo comes in as the 27th coach since they were promoted back to the KPL in 2009. The club parted ways with Marko Vasiljevic on Monday after their humiliating 4-1 loss to Mombasa-based Bandari FC.

In a twitter post, Ingwe have confirmed that Marko parted ways with the club on Monday following the bandari loss and Mbungo appointed as his successor.

“We have a new coach. AFC Leopards has appointed Rwandese Andre Casa Mbungo as our new coach on a one and a half year deal. Andre replaces Marko Vasiljevic who parted company with the club on Monday. Welcome to the den Andre,” Ingwe tweeted.

Ingwe has been on a relatively poor form for the past 10 years hence their frequent change of managers in that period. Vasilvejic for instance, was only in charge for two months and registered two wins out of the 10 played matches. The serbian also saw the club eliminated from the recent Sportpesa Cup tournament after playing one match.

The 51-year-old Rwandese was previously in charge of Kiyovu SC which topped the league standings in Rwanda for the better part of the 2017/2018 league season before settling for third place. He is however best known for tutoring strikers Jack Tuyisenge and Francis Mustapha who are key strikers for Ingwe’s rivals, Gor Mahia. Mbungo has also won Rwandan domestic cups known in Rwanda as Peace Cups.

Mbungo was linked with a move to the den in October last year and was reported to be on AFC’s short list to replace Rodolfo Zapata, who also stepped down after a run of poor results. At the time however, Serbian coach Nicola Kavazovic proved to be better suited for the job than Mbungo. Kavazovic then left the club after signing a deal with South Africa’s Free State Stars and Vasiljevic, who was his assistant, took over.

Mbungo has been tasked to win FKF Shield this season as well as earn a top three finish in the Kenyan Premier League. Ingwe are currently 15th in the Kenyan Premier League. His first fixture in charge will be against Mount Kenya United on Wednesday.
