Naivas is set to open a new branch in Kilifi, taking over a space previously occupied by rival Tuskys.

Tuskys vacated the space at Kilifi Complex Centre in October 2020. The branch will be Naivas’ 70th in the country, and is expected to provide at least 107 employment opportunities.

Naivas has opened several new branches in the past year, snapping up spaces left by struggling competitors including Tuskys, the collapsed Nakumatt and South African chain Shoprite, which is exiting the Kenyan market.

The Kilifi branch is located next to DTB Bank, and will be styled as a food market. It will sit on 25,000 square feet.

“The new store which will be a food market will be opened towards the end of this month (January) at the vacated Tuskys store,” Chief Executive Willy Kimani told journalists.

Naivas’ growth has been supported by the raising of Ksh6 billion from the sale of a 30 per cent stake to a consortium of investors, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), in August 2020.

It has managed to weather the economic storm occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, whose impact has been felt in the retail sector with business disrupted.

In November, Naivas took over space vacated by Nakumatt Holdings at Hazina Towers in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

It was the chain’s 67th outlet and its first food market store in the Nairobi CBD.

Naivas had already taken over former Nakumatt spaces at Likoni and Bamburi in Mombasa, Prestige Plaza and Moi Avenue in Nairobi and Mega City Mall in Kisumu.

It also opened a new branch at Waterfront Mall in Karen, Nairobi replacing troubled South African chain Shoprite which shut down stores as it looked to exit the East African Market.

In addition, Naivas unveiled a new food market store in Rongai in November 2020, and later opened a branch at Ananas Mall in Thika, Kiambu County.
