A gang of eight individuals raided the home of renowned industrialist and philanthropist Manu Chandaria on Monday, December 14.

The gang stormed the residence in Nairobi’s upmarket Muthaiga estate and accessed the premises despite the presence of an armed Administration Police officer deployed to the area.

Three security guards were found tied up at the residence. Chandaria and his family emerged from the ordeal unharmed, although it is believed that cash and valuables including jewelry were stolen.

The police officer stationed at the residence alleged that the thugs stole his G3 rifle.

Speaking to reporters, Nairobi Police boss Rashid Yaqub disclosed that the officer and guards were being questioned to shed more light on the incident.

He promised that the police would undertake thorough investigations and bring culprits to book.

Notably, Yakub disclosed that the stolen G3 rifle had since been recovered.

According to police, some of the thugs sustained gunshot wounds during the melee.

It is believed that the gang members escaped the scene by cutting through the neighbouring Karura Forest.

“We are investigating the incident. We will know the truth in a short while,” Yakub stated.

He noted that the investigation would focus on how thugs gained access to the premises despite the heavy security presence.

The veteran industrialist is a key figure behind Comcraft Group of Companies, which has a presence in over 40 countries.

Through his Chandaria Foundation, he has made significant contributions to various charitable initiatives around health, education and innovation.

He sits on the boards of several East African companies and, in 2003, was awarded both the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II and the Elder of the Burning Spear by former president Mwai Kibaki.
