Supermarket chain Carrefour on Wednesday, December 2 opened its first store outside Nairobi since entering the Kenyan market in 2016.

Carrefour unveiled a shiny new branch at City Mall in Nyali, Mombasa. The space was previously occupied by Shoprite Checkers which shut down its Nyali branch in June.

The 2,000 square feet retail space is Carrefour’s ninth branch in Kenya and its first in Kenya’s second largest city.

Notably, Carrefour plans to open two more branches at the Coast; at the Diani Centre Point Plaza and another at Shanzu Mall.

Carrefour disclosed that at least 190 people would be employed to work at the store, including a dedicated Mombasa customer service team.

Franck Moreau, Country Manager of Carrefour Kenya at Majid Al Futaim Retail, noted that entering Mombasa was a key part of their expansion plan.

“This is an exciting milestone for us since we ventured into Kenya in 2016, and we are looking forward to extending our quality goods and services to our customers here on the coast. Mombasa tumewasili! (Mombasa, we are here!)” he stated.

The new store promises variety, with fast moving consumer goods, electronics, fresh fruit and vegetables among goods being sold.

Among other things, the branch includes a home-made bakery section, a fresh fishery and a butchery counter.

Carrefour has also partnered with Jumia and Glovo in grocery retail to provide on-demand delivery services from its Nyali store.

The supermarket is eyeing Mombasa residents as well as local and international tourists who vacation at the Coast.

“Carrefour caters to the growing population looking for a wide range of products, sold at the best prices, with the promise of refunding its customers ten times the difference if they buy the same product at a lower price.

“Customers will also get loyalty points when they use our rewards app – My Club and gift vouchers will be available for purchase. This will give them the same great experience as our customers in Nairobi and offers us a chance to win new customers in Mombasa County,” Moreau maintained.
