Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama was in Busia on Thursday, November 19 to inspect ongoing construction works at his sports academy.

Construction began earlier this year in his rural home county, although works were slowed down by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The academy is, however, taking shape with various key installations at the site already completed.

It is expected that the sports academy will play a key role in promoting sporting talent from the region.

Once complete, the academy is expected to include various modern facilities for different sporting activities including football.

“Victor Wanyama Academy is a private organization dedicated to education, research, and innovation in collaboration with our students, governments, business, and industry, along with tangible benefits for individuals, society, and the economy in Kenya and Busia in particular,” the academy explained in a past release.

The Impact Montreal man had travelled to Kenya for Harambee Stars’ double header against Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021 qualifying.

A 1-1 draw at home and 2-1 loss away on Saturday, November 14, however, diminished the team’s chances of qualifying for the continental showpiece for the second time in a row.

Wanyama has taken a key role in philanthropy and socio-economic development projects in recent years.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, he initiated a campaign to donate face masks and hand sanitizers to residents of informal settlements in Nairobi.

He also worked with the Kenya Red Cross as a youth goodwill ambassador, spreading awareness on the pandemic and how to protect oneself.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was nominated for two Major League Soccer (MLS) awards in his debut season, including the Humanitarian of the Year award.

Having joined Montreal in March, he also features among nominees for the Newcomer of the Year award.
