The newly introduced revenue collection system by Nairobi County government to collect parking fees, land rates, business permits and other services has been marred with hitches as from 7am on Monday morning.

Motorists in the capital city are facing a challenge in paying parking fees as some have complained of receiving erroneous and invalid messages or not receiving the confirmation message.

The new internally managed system was introduced after the county government parted ways with JamboPay of Webtribe Limited after its contract ended in April 7, 2019.

However, the contract was extended twice for a duration of 60 days to pave way for a seamless transition from the private contractor to the county managed system.

JamboPay was contracted to collect the revenue on behalf of the county government in April 2014.

In the new system, users are required to dial USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) code *235#.

The county government aims at saving millions of shillings with the internally managed system since no fees will be paid to anyone outside the county for the services.

The introduction of the digital revenue collection system in 2014 saw revenue collection shoot from about Sh6 billion per month to about Sh13 billion a month.

According to County’s Finance executive Charles Kerich, motorists will not be liable to glitches experienced by the system.

“We have tested the new system, it is fast and efficient and it is ready to be used as from Monday,” said Mr Kerich.

The county has lost about Sh1 million in parking fee collections after JamboPay shut down its system on Saturday.
