Omwela succession battle at KRU heats up

Jostling for position ahead of the Kenya Rugby Union elections is heating up with three candidates having confirmed they will contest for the chairmanship. More candidates are also said to be in the running but this has not been confirmed.

The current Chairman, Richard Omwela has served two terms and will not be seeking re-election, which means fans should brace for a new regime.

KRU has been having troubles in the past year that has affected the players and maybe the reason why Shujaa perfomance has dropped. Recently, players boycotted training with Omwela warning them they will never don a Kenya Sevens’ shirt if they don’t show up for training. Hopefully change in management will see both Shujaa and Lionesses performances improve.

Former KRU vice-chairman Alexander ‘Sasha’ Mutai, the current secretary general Oduor Gangla and KRU board member Ezekiel Owuor have all expressed interest for the top seat ahead of the elections slated for March this year.

Kabras Sugar Club chairman Phillip Jalang’o and HomeBoyz Club chair Mike Rabar had expressed interest earlier but seemingly lost interest in the seat.

Sasha Mutai, one of the candidates, has gone ahead of his competitors to promise a complete surgery of the union and the sport in general if elected.

“People have lost faith in the current board and sponsors are also running away,” Mutai said while confirming his candidature,“That is why key Kenya Sevens players have boycotted national assignments. The situation is critical and we need to bring back sanity.”

Current secretary general and possibly Mutai’s competitor Oduor Gangla has stated that he will make his stand soon.

“I am consulting widely and I should make my stand known soon,” said Gangla explaining that the board will meet soon to set the date for the elections.
