After the Ministry of Education laid out strict rules on the admission of form one students to secondary schools, more than 35,000 students have applied for school transfers ahead of the reporting date.

The transfers have been noted after the government said it will only admit and recognize students with calling letters from the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).

Last week, the ministry issued a strong-worded directive to school heads over giving out of admission letters to students outside NEMIS.

Regional and county coordinators of education were also instructed to report and account for every child admitted in form one in the secondary school.

The massive transfer requests were made by school principals through the online portal after uploading their (students) details on the website.

The students who sought for transfers will be required to wait for the approval of the ministry then commencing to download the letter of admission.

However, approval of the school transfers in the national level will be granted by the ministry’s head office, while that of extra-county and county schools will be done by the regional coordinators and county directors of education respectively.

The Education Ministry has maintained that only students admitted through NEMIS will be given government capitation.

“When a student arrives for admission he/she will be required to present letters for verification on NEMIS,” said Dr Belio Kipsang the Education Principal Secretary.

The new guidelines provided by the ministry bars school heads from issuing direct admission letters to students despite the qualifications of the students.
