As Betty Kyalo returns to the K24 screen tonight, media watchers will be keenly watching whether she will draw viewers at the same level as last week when she made her debut.
Last week, K24 broke the bank to launch Kyalo’s premiere with the former KTN News anchor arriving in a convoy of limousines that included a Rolls Royce hired from Lexus Executive, a Nairobi-based company.
Business Today has learnt that the organiser of her entry into DMS Place, the Mediamax Network headquarters on Kijabe Street, was paid Ksh 200,000. In total, sources estimate that the media house may have spent upwards of Ksh 500,000 on that day.
Lexus Executive charges an hourly rate of between Ksh 7,000 and Ksh 15,000 depending on the car model and between Ksh 25,000 and Ksh 75,000 full day.
Despite the pomp and colour, some viewers were left disappointed after a mysterious VIP the station had promised would appear on the inaugural Weekend with Betty edition happened to be the news anchor herself. He interview with Milele FM presenter Jalang’o as he left his home for work at 4am was also below par.
Others criticised the station for appearing to put premium on Kyalo’s glamour rather than deliver on content.
However, Kyalo remains unperturbed describing her debut as a movie. She has taken to her Instagram page to express her gratitude on how things went, saying the “celebration was crazy fun!”
She also confirmed she was the mysterious VIP that the station hyped about.
