The Wiper Party has received a blow after its Secretary general Hassan Omar resigned, days after losing to Ali Hassan Joho in the race for Mombasa governor. This leaves the party almost headless as its chairman David Musila also resigned following a disputed nomination in the party for the Kitui gubernatorial seat.

Rendering his resignation letter to the embattled party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Omar said the move was meant to enable him ‘reorganise his politics’.

“Circumstances as pertains to the steps I wish to take to seek electoral justice as indeed was your quest at the Supreme Court as NASA, the reorganisation of my politics – if at all, my endeavours towards scholarships, personal development and repositioning of  the discourse for social justice and accountability in Mombasa and the Coast Region through non-state actors makes my position as Secretary General untenable,” said Omar.

The Wiper’s Mombasa pointman further stated that he will not in any way support the coalition towards the repeat election scheduled in October 17th. “It is unlikely that I will play any part in your 17th October Presidential quest, but nonetheless, I most sincerely wish you the very best,” he concluded.

Omar has been the Mombasa senator for the past five years, but decided to make a step higher in politics to contest the Mombasa gubernatorial seat against the incumbent Ali Joho.

He consequently lost, becoming the second runner-up with 43,790 votes (12.85%). Jubilees Suleiman Shahbal was second with 69,429 votes (20.37%) while Joho garnered 221,363 votes (64,94%) to secure a re-election. Other candidates who were in the race included Hezron Awiti who got 4,705 votes (1,38%) and Daniel Munga 1,574 votes (0,46%).
