Kenya’s GDP growth is pegged at 4.3% by the World Bank, a clear divergence with the National Treasury’s target range of 5.0%–5.3% as well as IMF forecast of 4.5%.

This shortfall underscores fiscal consolidation pressures as policymakers attempt to balance growth against heavy sovereign debt servicing burdens

Kenya’s Annual headline inflation extended its upward trend for three consecutive months, climbing to 6.8% in September (following 6.4% in June, 6.5% in July, and 6.6% in August).

According to Kenya National Bureau of Statistics(KNBS) Director-General Macdonald Obudho, price gains were primarily led by Transport (15.6%), Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages (9.5%), and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels (3.2%) over the 12-month period.

While high global borrowing costs, weak formal job creation, and geopolitical tensions constrain overall economic expansion, regional activity is being supported by stronger domestic demand, improved macroeconomic stability, and investments in digital technologies and the global energy transition.

With Sub-Saharan Africa’s average public debt near 57% of GDP, rising debt-service obligations are severely constraining fiscal flexibility. The World Bank stresses the necessity for Kenya and regional peers to boost domestic revenue mobilization, deepen local capital markets, and secure sustainable development financing as external aid flows diminish.

Commodity price shocks and transport overheads risk pushing 1.0 million to 2.4 million additional Kenyans below the international poverty line.

Nevertheless, an expected rebound in agricultural output from favourable weather, combined with monetary easing and a recovery in private-sector credit growth, provides an essential growth buffer against softening household consumption.
