Siaya County Referral Hospital is undergoing expansion to increase its capacity to 500 beds, with new operating theatres, an intensive care unit and diagnostic facilities being installed as part of the project.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said construction of the hospital’s Surgical Theatre and ICU Complex had been completed, with final equipping underway.

The complex includes four modern operating theatres, a 10-bed intensive care unit (ICU), a Central Sterile Services Department, pharmacies and imaging facilities, including X-ray and CT-scan units.

The expansion is being undertaken jointly by the national and Siaya county governments, with construction led by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) engineers. The facility is being developed into a Level 5 referral hospital serving the Lake Victoria region.

Other works include a specialised Mother and Child Complex and an Accident, Emergency and Outpatient Department that will house a dialysis centre. Additional inpatient wards are also being developed to address congestion and improve the hospital’s capacity to isolate patients where necessary.

The Ministry of Health is supplying additional equipment through the National Equipment Supplies Programme. The planned installations include digital X-ray systems, advanced laboratory equipment and specialised cardiology units.

The expansion is expected to increase the hospital’s ability to handle complex medical cases locally, although its impact will also depend on staffing levels, equipment availability and the resources required to operate the additional facilities.

Omollo said the hospital infrastructure upgrades were being accompanied by health financing reforms under the Social Health Authority (SHA) and Taifa Care, which are intended to reduce reliance on out-of-pocket payments and ease the cost of treatment for households.

The project comes amid wider efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure and access to specialised services beyond major urban centres.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also supporting coordination among agencies involved in the project, according to Omollo. The role includes helping safeguard critical health infrastructure and maintain a secure environment for the delivery of medical services.

Once completed and fully equipped, the expanded hospital is expected to serve patients from Siaya and neighbouring counties around the Lake Victoria region.
