Uchumi Shares: How to Play this Speculative Counter

Uchumi is a speculative counter, not built primarily on fundamentals or long-term valuation. It is built around trend, momentum and market behaviour.

The strategy is simple:

Buy when the retailer’s share price is down and the counter is stagnant, investors are advised to wait for a catalyst that changes the market’s perception and brings activity back into the counter. As momentum builds and available supply begins to dry up, the price can move sharply.

The opportunity is therefore not necessarily in predicting what Uchumi will eventually be worth. It is in recognising when the market is beginning to reprice the story.

“This is tactical trading, not a conventional fundamental investment. The key is patience on entry, discipline during the wait. Also worth noting with speculative counters is you only trade with money you’re ready to lose,” said CFA Dedan Maina.

Interestingly, Cooperative Bank of Kenya is still a major shareholder at Uchumi. Some of the retail chain’s bigger shareholders were locked in, not willingly though.

Coop inherited the shares when they acquired Jamii Bora bank. Co-op Bank’s continued presence on the retailer’s is more interesting as evidence of the retailer’s ownership history and the difficulty of unwinding legacy positions than as proof of institutional conviction.
