Couples seeking specialised fertility treatment in western Kenya can now access assisted reproductive services closer to home following the opening of a new Myra IVF and Medical Centre branch in Kisumu.

The facility, located at Tuffoam Mall along Jomo Kenyatta Road, expands the fertility provider’s footprint beyond Nairobi and Mombasa, potentially reducing the need for patients in the Lake Region to travel to the capital for consultations, monitoring and treatment.

The Kisumu centre is expected to serve patients from Kisumu and neighbouring counties including Siaya, Kakamega, Homa Bay, Migori and Busia, where access to specialised fertility services has historically been more concentrated in major urban centres.

Myra IVF, founded and led by fertility specialist Dr. Sarita Sukhija, provides a range of assisted reproductive services including in-vitro fertilisation, intrauterine insemination, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, fertility investigations, embryo freezing, egg freezing and reproductive counselling.

The Kisumu opening comes as fertility care in Kenya becomes more visible, with couples increasingly seeking medical intervention for infertility and women considering fertility preservation as they delay parenthood for professional, educational or personal reasons.

Male fertility is also receiving greater attention as infertility is increasingly understood as a condition that can involve either or both partners.

Technology is becoming a bigger part of the sector’s expansion. Myra IVF says its laboratories use advanced reproductive technologies, including the IMT Matcher system, a UK-developed barcoding and witnessing platform designed to reduce the risk of human error when handling reproductive samples during IVF procedures.

The company says it is the first and only fertility centre in Africa currently using the system. The technology digitally verifies the identity and matching of reproductive samples at different stages of treatment, adding an additional layer of laboratory safety.

Such systems reflect a broader push by fertility providers to strengthen embryology laboratory controls as reproductive medicine becomes more technology-intensive.

For patients outside Nairobi, however, access remains about more than laboratory technology.

Fertility treatment can require multiple consultations, investigations and monitoring appointments, making distance a practical and financial consideration for couples undergoing treatment.

By establishing a presence in Kisumu, Myra IVF is positioning the city as a regional access point for specialised reproductive care, potentially bringing services that have traditionally required travel to Nairobi closer to patients in western and Nyanza Kenya.

For couples navigating infertility, that may mean fewer journeys, lower travel costs and access to specialist care without leaving the region.
