KenGen (Kenya Electricity Generating Company) Plc has been named Public Service Organisation of the Year at the Kenya Quality Awards (KQA) 2026, the state-owned enterprise distinguishing itself as a benchmark for quality, efficiency and excellence in the public service.
The award was presented during the KQA 2026 gala at the Argyle Grand Hotel, Nairobi. The annual awards are organised by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), and this year’s ceremony was presided over by Deputy Chief of Staff Amos Gathecha.
The Kenya Quality Awards recognise organisations that have embedded quality and continuous improvement in the way they work. Entrants undergo a rigorous assessment covering leadership, customers and markets, operations, people, evidence-based decision-making, organisational learning and adherence to standards.
KenGen Qualities Impressed the Adjudicators
KenGen was recognised for its robust Quality Management System (QMS) and for championing ISO Integrated Management Systems as a driver of its strategy, organisational goals and operational efficiency.
The honour crowns a quality journey for KenGen spanning more than two decades. In 2004, KenGen became the first public organisation in Kenya to be certified to ISO 9001 for Quality Management Systems.
The State-owned Enterprise went on to attain ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management Systems in 2009, and ISO 45001 certification for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems in 2024, covering all its generation modes and associated activities.
KenGen Acting Managing Director and CEO Eng. Julius Odumbe dedicated the award to the company’s employees.
“This award belongs to every member of the KenGen family. At KenGen, quality is not just about one department. It is how we work, from the control rooms of our power stations to the way we serve our stakeholders. Being named Public Service Organisation of the Year confirms that a public institution can match, and set, the highest standards anywhere,” said Eng. Odumbe.
“For more than twenty years, our Integrated Management Systems have been the backbone of our strategy. They help us deliver safe, reliable and competitively priced power to Kenyans while protecting the environment and keeping our people safe. As we pursue our G2G 2034 strategy, this recognition challenges us to raise the bar even higher,” said Odumbe.
By bringing quality, environmental, and occupational health and safety requirements under one framework, KenGen applies consistent standards across its hydro, geothermal, wind and thermal operations, sharpening efficiency and building stakeholder confidence.
For Kenyans, the benefit is tangible. As the East Africa’s leading electricity generator, with about 90 per cent of its installed capacity drawn from green sources, KenGen’s disciplined systems translate into dependable, clean power for homes, businesses and industry.
KenGen thanked KEBS for championing a national culture of quality and reaffirmed its commitment to continual improvement as it works to power Kenya’s growth sustainably.

Today, KenGen PLC has an installed generation capacity of 1,786 MW, of which about 90% is drawn from green sources namely: Hydro (826 MW), Geothermal (754 MW), Wind (25.5 MW). The balance is from Thermal.
