Two suspected members of a criminal gang have been arrested in Kisumu following a security operation that also led to the recovery of a homemade firearm and an assortment of crude weapons and other items believed to be linked to criminal activities.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the operation was conducted by detectives from the Operations Support Unit (OSU), Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and the GSU Tactical Team following intelligence on the suspects’ alleged criminal activities.
The suspects were identified as Joseph Mwata Magak, alias “Boyi Sampa”, and Isaac Omondi Ojwang’.
Detectives subsequently searched Magak’s rented house in Mamboleo Pocho Estate, Kisumu, where they discovered a cache of items concealed in the master bedroom.
Among the items recovered was a homemade firearm, a bow and four arrows, a panga and a toy gun.
Detectives also recovered five rolls of cannabis sativa, a police siren, a pair of police boots, six pairs of jungle-green tactical trousers, a camouflage jacket and a pair of tactical boots.
Other items recovered from the house included a bottle of gun oil, a Kenyan flag and a Subaru front bumper.
The DCI said further investigations had established that Magak has an ongoing case of attempted robbery with violence before the Nakuru Law Courts.
The two suspects remain in custody as detectives process them ahead of their arraignment in court.
The recovered items have been secured as exhibits as investigations into the suspects’ activities continue.
The DCI commended members of the public for providing timely and actionable information, saying such intelligence remains critical in efforts to combat organised crime and keep communities safe.
