Britam Asset Managers has launched KidNest, a children’s investment account designed to help families start building long-term wealth for their children from an early age.

The product allows parents and guardians to begin investing with a minimum contribution of Ksh1,000, with funds professionally managed and aimed at supporting future goals such as education and other long-term financial needs.

The launch comes at a time when Kenya is seeking to deepen its investment culture and improve household financial resilience. While many families save for their children’s future, fewer begin investing early enough to benefit from long-term compounding.

Speaking during the unveiling in Nairobi, Britam Group Managing Director and CEO Tom Gitogo said the initiative is intended to encourage earlier conversations around wealth creation.

“The greatest advantage any investor has is time. Our job is not only to serve today’s investor, but also to shape who tomorrow’s investor will be. Today’s children are tomorrow’s wealth creators and giving them an early start can help build the financial habits and foundations they will carry into adulthood,” said Gitogo.

Britam Asset Managers CEO and Principal Officer Barack Obatsa said the firm is focused on making professionally managed investments more accessible and relevant to more Kenyans.

“At Britam Asset Managers, we are focused on making professionally managed investments more accessible, understandable and relevant to more Kenyans at every stage of their wealth journey. KidNest extends that commitment to the earliest stage of life, enabling families to make a child’s first investment from KES 1,000,” said Mr Obatsa.

“By giving children the benefit of time, consistency and compounding, we are not only helping build a financial nest egg for their future but also nurturing a generation that sees investing as a lifelong habit rather than something to start later in life.”

According to the 2024 FinAccess Household Survey, the proportion of Kenyan adults who save fell from 74 per cent in 2021 to 68.1 per cent in 2024, while only 18.3 per cent were considered financially healthy.

The survey also found that formal financial access increased from 83.7 per cent in 2021 to 84.8 per cent in 2024, but only 42.1 per cent of the population demonstrated high financial literacy, measured through knowledge of concepts such as inflation, interest rates and risk diversification.

Britam said the findings highlight the need to strengthen financial planning and investment habits from an early age.

The launch of KidNest expands Britam Asset Managers’ portfolio of professionally managed investment products. The company manages more than Sh250 billion in assets and says it is continuing to broaden access to wealth-building solutions for retail investors.

Britam said KidNest forms part of its wider strategy to strengthen Kenya’s investment culture and support the development of the country’s next generation of investors.
