Kenyan taxpayers will have a chance to learn more about the country’s latest tax changes without leaving their homes, after the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) announced free virtual training on the Finance Act 2026.

The sessions, scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, will focus on changes introduced by the new law as well as new features available on the iTax platform.

KRA said the training is aimed at helping taxpayers, businesses and other stakeholders understand the changes and avoid mistakes when dealing with their tax obligations.

The first session will run from 9 am to 11 am, while the second will take place between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm, giving participants two options to choose from.

“Choose the session that works best for you and get up to speed with the latest tax and iTax updates,” KRA said in a notice shared on Monday.

New tax rules

The training comes as individuals and businesses adjust to changes introduced under the Finance Act 2026, which became law after President William Ruto signed the Finance Bill on June 23.

The legislation introduced various tax measures that are being implemented during the 2026/27 financial year as the government seeks to raise revenue to fund its budget.

One of the changes already taking effect is the removal of excise duty on bottled water from July 1, 2026. KRA has also issued guidance to manufacturers and importers on the handling of unused excise stamps following the change.

For businesses, understanding such changes is important because mistakes in tax declarations can result in penalties, additional payments or delays in obtaining tax compliance documents.

KRA has also been increasing the use of digital records to check information submitted by taxpayers. Income and expenses declared in tax returns can be compared with information from eTIMS, TIMS, withholding tax records and customs data.

This makes accurate record keeping increasingly important for businesses and individuals with taxable income.

iTax changes

The virtual classes will also introduce taxpayers to new iTax functionalities as the authority continues moving more tax services online.

The announcement comes after the platform experienced pressure around the June 30 deadline for filing 2025 income tax returns. KRA said high traffic from taxpayers attempting to submit their returns contributed to intermittent delays.

The incident highlighted the importance of taxpayers familiarising themselves with iTax before major filing deadlines, rather than waiting until the last day.

KRA has encouraged taxpayers to take advantage of the training to understand the new system features and changes in tax requirements.

The sessions are expected to be particularly useful for small businesses, employers and individuals who handle their own tax matters and may not have access to professional tax advisers.

With tax administration becoming increasingly digital, understanding how to use iTax and keeping proper records could help taxpayers avoid unnecessary compliance problems.
