Government Upgrades Nairobi Sewer System Under River Regeneration Project

The government has stepped up efforts to restore the Nairobi River through a major sewerage infrastructure project that is expected to improve sanitation, reduce pollution and support environmental conservation in parts of the capital.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the ongoing works under the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme include the construction of a 27-kilometre trunk sewer network serving Lucky Summer and Baba Dogo in Ruaraka Constituency.

According to the PS, the new sewer lines are being installed along the Nairobi River corridor to intercept and divert wastewater away from the river and nearby residential areas before it is treated.

“The project is delivering a 27-kilometre trunk sewer line along the Nairobi River corridor, creating an interceptor system that diverts wastewater away from the river and surrounding neighbourhoods,” Omollo said.

He said the upgraded sewerage network will have the capacity to treat up to 60 million litres of wastewater daily, helping reduce pollution levels, improve sanitation and protect the Nairobi River ecosystem.

The sewerage upgrade forms part of the broader Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, which seeks to rehabilitate one of the country’s most polluted waterways through infrastructure development, environmental restoration and improved waste management.

Omollo also highlighted the role of the ClimateWorX Mtaani Initiative in complementing the regeneration programme, saying the initiative has created employment opportunities for more than 45,000 young people and women.

The beneficiaries are engaged in activities including river clean-up, drainage maintenance and environmental restoration across the city.

He said the initiative demonstrates how environmental conservation projects can simultaneously generate jobs and improve public infrastructure.

The Principal Secretary added that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has supported implementation of the programme through National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs), who have coordinated project activities and mobilised communities participating in the ClimateWorX Mtaani Initiative.

The Nairobi River Regeneration Programme is part of the government’s broader urban renewal agenda aimed at improving sanitation infrastructure, restoring degraded ecosystems and enhancing the quality of life for residents as Nairobi continues to experience rapid population growth.
