The reconstruction and modernisation of Ithookwe Airstrip in Kitui County is nearing completion, with the government positioning the facility as a key driver of regional connectivity, investment and economic growth.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the upgraded airstrip would play a critical role in improving transport efficiency and opening up underserved regions to trade, tourism and investment opportunities.
“Transport infrastructure remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s economic growth, enabling the efficient movement of people, goods and services while unlocking the potential of underserved regions,” Omollo said.
According to the PS, the project has entered its final stages and now features a newly paved 950-metre asphalt runway identified as Runway 05/23.
The runway, approximately 15 metres wide, has been constructed with grading, compaction and surface finishing designed to meet aviation standards.

The modernisation project also includes a new terminal building fitted with VIP reception areas and lounges targeting dignitaries, investors and business travellers.
Additional infrastructure developed at the site includes a secure perimeter fence, a bitumen-standard parking area and an internal access driveway.
Authorities have also expanded and marked the aircraft apron to improve aircraft manoeuvrability and facilitate smoother ground operations for helicopters and light aircraft.
Omollo said the upgraded airstrip is already significantly reducing travel time between Kitui and major urban centres.
“The airstrip is already redefining travel efficiency, cutting flight time to Nairobi and Mombasa to about 35 minutes, a significant improvement from the long and often unpredictable road journeys,” he said.
Strategically located, the facility is expected to strengthen links between Nairobi, Mombasa, Garissa and Wajir while supporting investment in Kitui’s mining sector and tourism activities around the South Kitui Game Reserve.
The government also expects the upgraded infrastructure to support emergency medical evacuation services and attract regular commercial light-aircraft operations.
Officials believe the project could stimulate broader economic activity in the region by boosting trade, tourism and business mobility.
Omollo added that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has played a central role in implementing and operationalising the facility, particularly in strengthening security systems.
“Through controlled and closely monitored entry and exit points, the Department safeguards the facility against security risks while ensuring smooth, safe and efficient operations,” he said.
