A 45-year-old woman is being treated as a person of interest by police following the sudden death of Dr Job Obwaka, one of the country’s most respected obstetricians and gynaecologists, who died at the age of 83.

Dr Obwaka was pronounced dead on arrival at Nairobi Hospital on Friday evening after falling ill at her residence in Kitengela, on Labour Day, May 1.

According to accounts given to investigators, the veteran doctor had travelled to visit the woman, whom he had known since 2015. The pair shared a meal of rice and meat at her home.

Shortly afterwards, Dr Obwaka complained of feeling drowsy and began struggling to breathe after drinking water, the woman told police.

She used the deceased’s phone to contact a colleague, as well as a family member, and was advised to rush him to Nairobi Hospital.

A neighbour was called to assist, and Dr Obwaka was rushed to the hospital in the woman’s vehicle, where he was confirmed dead.

Police from Kilimani station have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the death.

Officers visited the property and collected samples of the food and drink for analysis, while an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause.

Dr Obwaka’s death comes just weeks after his high-profile arrest on March 14, 2026, when police detained him in a parking area near the NSSF Building in Nairobi on allegations of involvement in the falsification of hospital records linked to the Kenya Hospital Association.
