The president of the Recording Academy, the body responsible for the Grammy Awards, is due to travel to Nairobi later next month for high-level discussions aimed at strengthening the country’s creative economy and helping its artists gain greater international recognition and opportunities.

Panos A. Panay will visit Kenya from May 26 to May 29, 2026, where he is scheduled to meet President William Ruto as well as local musicians and industry figures.

According to the Recording Academy, the meetings will focus on talent development, building stronger industry infrastructure, and creating pathways for local artists to access global markets.

Panay’s trip is supported by the US Department of State’s Arts Envoy Program, an initiative that deploys American arts professionals to foster cultural exchange and collaboration around the world.

His visit forms part of the Academy’s wider strategy to expand its footprint across Africa and the Middle East, positioning countries such as Kenya as important players in the international music ecosystem.

The Recording Academy has described the visit as an opportunity to exchange ideas on how to amplify Kenya and Africa’s creative output on the world stage.

While the Grammys have historically faced criticism for limited recognition of African artists, initiatives such as this reflect a growing effort to engage more deeply with the continent’s rapidly evolving music scenes.
