A major sewerage upgrade project is underway in Meru Town, targeting improved sanitation services for nearly 200,000 residents.

The Meru Sewerage Project, being implemented by the Tana Water Works Development Agency, will expand sanitation coverage to approximately 193,000 people across the fast-growing municipality.

The project includes the construction of more than 50 kilometres of trunk sewer lines and a modern wastewater treatment plant in Rwanyange with a capacity of 11,800 cubic metres per day.

Key areas set to benefit from the new infrastructure include Makutano, Milimani, Kinoru, Mwandantu, Gitimbine, Kaaga, Gikumene and Kirunga, where improved sanitation is expected to enhance public health and support orderly urban development.

Interior PS Dr Raymond Omollo says the initiative comes at a critical time as the town grapples with aging sewer systems that are no longer adequate for its growing population.

“Sanitation lies at the heart of sustainable urban development and for the rapidly expanding Meru Town, the need to replace aging sewer infrastructure has become both urgent and unavoidable. The Meru Sewerage Project is a transformative intervention designed to expand sanitation services to approximately 193,000 residents across the municipality,” Omollo says.

Upon completion of the new system, the aging Gakoromone Wastewater Treatment Plant, which has exceeded its design life, will be decommissioned.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also supporting coordination at the local level to ensure smooth implementation and alignment among stakeholders.
