Commission for University Education(CUE) has blacklisted 15 Universities warning that those purporting to offer degrees without accreditation are doing so illegally and that any institution operating as a university or degree awarding and which does not appear on the Commission list of approved institutions is illegal and their degree qualifications will not be recognized in Kenya.
Those affected by the CUE directive include Eldoret Bible College in Uasin Gishu, Al-Munawarrah College in Mombasa, Grace Life Bible College, Africa Theological Seminary- Kitale, Regions beyond Ministry Bible College in Thika; Baraton College Kapsabet and The Africa Talent University-Kisumu.
Others Breakthrough Bible College-Nairobi; Theophillus Theological College-Kiambu; Northwestern Christian University-Kakamega; Logos University Kakamega; Harvest Land University-Kisumu; Word of Faith Bible College-Vihiga; Kenya Anglican University-Kanyuambora in Embu and The East African University Bradegate International University in Nyeri.
The CUE has flagged these institutions, warning students and parents about the risks of enrolling in unaccredited programs.
The mushrooming of these illegal mostly theological-based universities can be attributed to formal oversight from their faiths, especially those run by indigenous or locally-based church organizations.
Kenya has seen a rapid growth or largely unregulated bible schools, theological colleges as well as online theological training platforms.
A petition is already in parliament seeking for the establishment of a legal framework to regulate theological colleges, set standards for curricula, accreditation and pastoral training.
Commission has accredited 36 public universities
The CUE list of accredited universities include 35 public universities, 28 private chartered universities; three Specialized Degree Awarding Universities (Public) namely National Defence University-Kenya, Open University of Kenya and National Intelligence and Research University.
Institutions with Letters of Interim Authority include GRETSA University, Riara University, Pioneer International University, International Leadership University, AMREF International University and Uzima University.
There are 28 accredited Public University Constituent Colleges and two Private University Constituent Colleges namely Hekima University College and Marist International University College.

The charter, maze, logo and seal, were given to the University by President Ruto, meaning it is now accredited to operate independently from Moi University-its parent, award its own degrees, and conduct research.
