Former Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency, Eliud Owalo, has revealed his net worth is now about Ksh 1 billion, putting his personal wealth back in the spotlight just days after quitting government to launch his 2027 presidential bid.

Owalo disclosed during a discussion about his finances, saying his wealth has grown sharply over the last three years. During his vetting for the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication and Digital Economy position in 2022, Owalo told MPs his net worth stood at Ksh 645 million.

The latest figure means his net worth has increased by about Ksh 355 million over the period.

“That is an interesting question. I am worth about 1 billion shillings right now,” Owalo said when asked about his current net worth.

In the 2022 vetting, Owalo gave a breakdown of some of his assets, listing a Nairobi home valued at Ksh 120 million, an upcountry residence worth Ksh 70 million, four vehicles valued at Ksh 15 million, and upcountry land estimated at Ksh 200 million. He also told the committee he had other investments at the time, including business interests and long-term projects, as lawmakers questioned him on his suitability for the Cabinet role.

The former CS has, in recent months, served at State House as Deputy Chief of Staff, where he was in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency, a role that involved tracking the implementation of government programmes and performance across ministries and State agencies.

However, Owalo resigned from the position last month, saying he could not remain in office after declaring his intention to run for president in the 2027 General Election.

“Following my declaration earlier today of my intention to run for the Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the 2027 General Election, my continued service as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency has become untenable,” Owalo said.

He added: “I have therefore resigned from the position with immediate effect.”

Owalo’s move has added an early twist to the 2027 political contest, especially because he has previously worked closely with top leaders across the political divide.

Over the years, he has been known as a strategist and adviser, and his entry into the presidential race is already attracting debate on whether he will build a strong national campaign or use the bid to negotiate political alliances.

Since quitting government, Owalo has been positioning himself as a candidate focused on governance reforms, accountability and better service delivery, while also promising to push policies aimed at easing the economic burden on Kenyans.

His resignation and the declaration of his Ksh 1 billion net worth have now placed him firmly in the spotlight, as the country heads into an intense pre-election season where personal wealth, leadership track record and credibility will be closely examined.
