Omollo Hails Tana River Bridge as Milestone for North Eastern Development

The government has hailed the ongoing expansion and construction of the new Tana River Bridge along the Ukasi–Garissa–Modika (A3) Road as a transformative infrastructure project set to unlock economic potential in North Eastern Kenya.

In a statement, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the project, which is being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), marks a major milestone for the region. He noted that the project was officially launched by President William Ruto in February 2025.

“The ongoing expansion and construction of the new Tana River Bridge and its approach roads marks a major infrastructural milestone for the North Eastern region,” Omollo said, adding that the project is expected to significantly improve connectivity and safety along the busy A3 corridor.

According to the PS, the new bridge will span approximately 150 metres and is designed to serve as the primary gateway for the region.

“Once complete, the bridge will ease movement, improve road safety and strengthen the corridor that links communities to essential services,” he said.

Omollo said the project has also been designed to address congestion challenges at the existing crossing. Upon completion of the new bridge, the current 43-year-old Tana River Bridge will be reserved for lighter traffic, including pedestrians, bodaboda riders and livestock.

“This arrangement will enhance convenience for local communities while significantly reducing congestion and traffic conflicts,” he said.

Beyond improved mobility, Omollo emphasised the broader socio-economic impact of the project, describing it as a catalyst for growth in North Eastern Kenya.

“The bridge will open up the region for trade, attract new investment and enable farmers, traders and households to access markets, schools and healthcare facilities more efficiently,” he said.

He added that the improved infrastructure will have a direct impact on livelihoods across the region. “This is a project that promises to transform local livelihoods and accelerate development across North Eastern Kenya,” Omollo said.

The government says the Tana River Bridge project underscores its commitment to using strategic infrastructure investments to promote regional integration, improve service delivery and spur inclusive economic growth in historically underserved areas.
