The tax authority announced that the appointments, effective January 12, 2026, are part of a broader effort to enhance the collection of taxes and the development of policies.

Brian Omooria Nyakeri has been appointed Commissioner for Business Strategy, Technology, and Enterprise Modernisation. Nyakeri brings more than two decades of experience from the private sector, having led major digital transformation projects for companies across Africa and globally.

Before this, he was the Lead Consultant and Chief Technology Officer at Agile Cloud Limited.

“Nyakeri holds an Executive MBA from the South African Development Centre/IBM Institute for Business Value and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Systems Engineering from Africa Nazarene University,” the authority said.

Adding;

“He is certified in cloud architecture, data strategy, systems engineering, and enterprise design. He is also a member of the Computer Society of Kenya and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association.”

Alex Kimani Mwangi has been appointed Commissioner of the new Tax Research and Analysis Unit.

The unit will act as the central hub for research, modelling, and forecasting, providing evidence-based insights to guide Kenya’s tax policies. It will also support the National Treasury and strengthen internal research capacity through data-driven approaches.

Mwangi, a veteran of the authority since 2002, has served in multiple leadership positions, including Acting Commissioner for Business Strategy, Technology, and Enterprise Modernisation, and Deputy Commissioner for Research, Knowledge Management, and Corporate Planning.

“He holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Statistics from the University of Nairobi and has received specialised training in Tax Policy and Administration at Japan’s National Tax College,” the authority noted.

“He is a Certified Ethics and Integrity Practitioner and a member of the Royal Statistical Society and the Economics Society of Kenya.”
