People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has urged Kenyans to protect and recommit themselves to the 2010 Constitution as the country marked its first Katiba Day.
In a statement shared on her X account, Karua highlighted the significance of the Constitution, adopted fifteen years ago, describing it as a turning point in Kenya’s governance and democracy.
She noted that the charter was never just a legal document, but a vision that placed the ordinary Kenyan at the centre of national development.
It promised better healthcare access for remote communities, greater opportunities for farmers through market support, dignity in education for children in informal settlements, and a culture of accountability among leaders.
“On 27th August 2010, Kenya chose a new path. The Constitution we promulgated was not just about law, it was about the ordinary Kenyan. It was about the mother in Turkana finally having a clinic nearby. It was about the farmer in Migori receiving market access support for their goods. It was about the child in Kibera accessing education and a meal with dignity. It was about leaders finally being accountable to the people they serve,” she said.
Drawing from her role as Justice Minister during the constitution-making process, Karua recalled championing the campaign for its adoption.
She emphasised that she worked to rally stakeholders and unite the country behind a common vision, believing that the future of Kenya could not be built on division.
However, she cautioned that the values enshrined in the Constitution are increasingly under threat. Karua pointed to growing cases of abductions, torture, economic hardships, and attempts to weaken devolution, as well as the rise of leaders who prioritise personal interests over public service.
Despite these challenges, she underscored the resilience of Kenyans who continue to defend the spirit of the Constitution through the courts, community action, and civic engagement.
“As Minister of Justice, I fought for this vision. I worked to bring all stakeholders to the table and build consensus for a Yes vote, because I knew Kenya’s future could not be built on division,” Karua stated.
Adding;
“Fifteen years later, that promise is under threat. We see abductions, torture, economic hardships, attacks on devolution, and leaders who place self above service. But we also see the resilience of Kenyans who continue to defend the Constitution in courts, in communities, and in the public square.”
“I remain committed to this struggle. The Constitution must continue to work for the people: to put food on the table, deliver healthcare, protect livelihoods, and safeguard justice. On this Promulgation Day, let us recommit ourselves, not just to words on paper, but to the lived promise of dignity, equity, and justice for every Kenyan.”
Katiba Day
President William Ruto recently declared August 27 as Katiba Day to be celebrated annually in recognition of the 2010 Constitution.
It is not a public holiday, but state institutions, schools, and diplomatic missions are required to organise civic activities to promote constitutional awareness.
